Honors Collegium 70AL: Gene Discovery Laboratory Spring 2003

sponsored by Howard Hughes Medical Institute & National Science Foundation

The Howard Hughes Medical Institute undergraduate teaching grant funds and supports both the HC70 A and HC70AL courses. 1 million dollars was awarded to 20 professors across the nation to promote undergraduate teaching in the sciences. Dr. Goldberg's program specifically targets non-science majors and teaches them about science. The first part of the HHMI program is the HC70A class, which introduces scientific concepts in a classroom setting, through lectures, articles and in class demonstrations. The second part of the program invites students from the HC70A course to apply the techniques learned in the class to a real life experience. HC70AL is an intensive laboratory experience for non-science majors. This course is designed to complement the HC70A course by applying the experiments discussed in the classroom to the laboratory. The objective is to introduce experiments in a real life research experience under the guidance and direction of the teaching assistants and the professor. The students will have an opportunity to study and analyze a gene, which has not been studied previous to the class. The students are also responsible for writing an essay, recording and analyzing data in a lab notebook and a final oral presentation.
