He is survived by his loving wife of 54
years Betsy; his brothers Dr. Victor Laties of Rochester, N.Y., Dr. Allan
Laties of Philadelphia, PA and David Laties of Kingston, N.Y
He was a graduate of Townsend Harris High
School in New York City and received his B.S. in 1941 from Cornell
University. He went on to obtain a Masterís degree in plant physiology and
biochemistry at the University of Minnesota in 1942 and ultimately, a Ph.D.
in plant physiology in 1947 at the University of California at Berkeley.His
Berkeley experience was interrupt‚ed by a stint in the U.S. Navy as a radar
technician aboard a mine sweeper in the China Sea. Upon finishing at
Berkeley, he went on intermittently over a 12 year period to be a Fellow and
Senior Fellow in biology at Caltech, interspersed with a Rockefeller
Foundation Fellowship at the University of Sheffield and Cambridge
University in England and a 3 year period at the University of Michigan.
In 1959 he became associate professor of
plant physiology at U.C.L.A. in the enriching presence of Professor Jacob
Biale. He later became professor of plant physiology in the Dept. of Botany
and ultimately, professor in the Dept. of Molecular, Cell and Developmental
Biology where he served until retirement. In 1966-1967 he enjoyed a year as
a Guggenheim fellow in the biochemistry section of the CSIRO in Canberra,
Australia. He has had post-doctoral fellows working in his lab from England,
France, Germany, Israel, Thailand, New Zealand, Australia and Japan and many
of the states.
He had been an active environ‚mentalist
supporting the Sierra Club, Nature Conservancy, Defend‚ers of Wildlife, the
World Wildlife Fund and among his favorite forms of relaxation was walking
along the shore or in the Santa Monica Mountains with his Rottweiler
