Angiogenesis governs the sprouting and migration of endothelial cells from existing vessels. In the zebrafish, endothelial cells sprout from the dorsal aorta and migrate dorsally to form intersegemental vessels in the trunk during the first day after fertilization. In addition, we noted endothelial cells sprout from the presumptive venous cells and migrate ventrally to form the caudal vein plexus. From classic and chemical genetic screens, we have identified mutations and compounds that block the formation of the caudal vein plexus. We are currently using these resources to dissect genetic pathways critical for the angiogenesis from the venous cells.
